“The Freedom Dancers” Burning Man 2026
Freedom Dancers is a large-scale sculptural installation composed of seven 10-foot Tree Lady figures, each representing a stage of grief transformed through awareness, movement, and compassion. Together, the seven figures form a complete emotional arc—an embodied journey from shock and denial to acceptance and collective healing.
This installation is not created all at once. It unfolds over seven months, with each Tree Lady emerging through a monthly workshop and community build. Each figure carries a distinct emotional stage, gesture, and energetic quality, expressed through form, light, and negative space. The dancers are designed to hold both strength and openness—allowing light to pass through them, illuminate their interiors, and shift as the environment changes.
At the heart of the project is the belief that grief is not something to fix or move past, but something that can be met, witnessed, and transformed through presence and creative process.
A Collective Build
Freedom Dancers is intentionally collaborative. Each month, participants gather in the studio for a guided workshop focused on the emotional theme of that Tree Lady. During these workshops, participants create personal art pieces reflecting their own journey, and are also invited to create an optional symbolic element that becomes part of the large sculpture. Over time, each Freedom Dancer is shaped by many hands, carrying the intentions, care, and lived experiences of the community that helped build her.
This slow, layered approach allows the installation to hold real human energy—not just as an artwork, but as a shared ritual of making.

Intention
Freedom Dancers is an exploration of how grief lives in the body, and how creative process can support transformation without bypassing or fixing. This work is not therapy, but it is deeply intentional. It invites slowness, presence, and participation, honoring the truth that healing often happens through shared experience and creative expression.
As the installation grows, it becomes a visible record of collective becoming—grief turned toward compassion, held in form, light, and motion.
